Soil2Power aims to transform the way energy is supplied to agricultural systems.

As part of the project, an innovative high-performance microbial fuel cell has been developed, capable of generating electricity by harnessing the activity of microorganisms and organic matter present in the soil. This technology offers a sustainable and autonomous alternative to conventional chemical batteries, whose manufacture and disposal have a high environmental impact.

The ultimate goal of Soil2Power is to develop a fully autonomous valve irrigation system, thus eliminating the need for external batteries in agricultural fields. The project is currently in its field validation phase, which is being carried out at Agròpolis, the experimental agricultural research site of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). This phase will allow the actual performance of the microbial cells to be evaluated by activating irrigation valves in a vegetable plantation.
